Understanding Cannabinol Oil (CBN) and Its Uses and Benefits

If most people were asked to name as many cannabinoids as they could, the majority would likely be able to name CBD. A few more might name CBG, but not many would be able to name cannabinol (usually abbreviated as CBN). However, despite that lack of familiarity, cannabinol oil is something that more people should understand and use in their daily lives. Not sure what this cannabinoid is or what it might be able to offer your life? We’ll explore what you should know below.

What Is Cannabinol?

Cannabinol is a cannabinoid, like THC and CBD, and is derived from cannabis. Unlike CBD and many other cannabinoids, cannabinol only comes from the cannabis plant. Also unlike its non-THC cousins, it is mildly psychoactive. It is not powerful enough to create a sense of feeling “high”, but it is not completely non-psychoactive like CBD. It also binds with endocannabinoid receptors throughout the body. Usually, these receptors bind things like serotonin and dopamine.

How Does Cannabinol Oil Differ from CBD?

CBD is the most familiar cannabinoid, behind THC. And because CBN sounds a lot like CBD, it’s easy to confuse the two. However, they are drastically different. Let’s look at just how cannabinol oil stacks up to CBD.

Help with Catching Your Z’s

CBD is effective in helping with anxiety, which can offer some respite if you’re finding it hard to drift off to sleep at night. Cannabinol oil, on the other hand, seems to offer even stronger effects. At least one study indicates that it showcases sedative-like effects without the side effects and other complications that come from using sedatives.

Pain Relief

CBD and other cannabinoids have shown at least some degree of pain-relieving capabilities. Cannabinol oil shares those characteristics. A study conducted in 2019 highlighted that it was able to alleviate pain in laboratory rats, which offers hope for human beings suffering from chronic pain due to conditions like fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and many others.

Inflammation Reduction

Inflammation is at the root of many of the most debilitating diseases today. Most cannabinoids have shown anti-inflammatory capabilities, with CBD being perhaps the most famous. CBN offers the same benefits, as highlighted in a study conducted with arthritic laboratory rats. For humans, this may mean relief from a wide range of conditions, not just arthritis.

Neuroprotective Properties

Of all the diseases that affect humankind, few are as frightening as Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative conditions. They can rob an individual of their memories, their personality, and even their family. The good news is that most cannabinoids, including cannabinol, seem to provide at least some degree of neuroprotective capabilities. For CBN, a study conducted in 2005 found that it prevented the onset of ALS in laboratory animals.

Antibacterial Capabilities

We live in a world with a heightened wariness when it comes to bacteria and viruses. Between the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of so-called superbugs (resistant bacteria), humanity is facing unique threats. Cannabinol oil offers antibacterial properties that, at least according to one study, are substantial enough to kill MRSA bacteria, which is one of the most infamous types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Anti-Seizure Capabilities

One capability that sets cannabinol oil apart from CBD and others in the same family is its ability to fight seizures due to several epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Since most of these conditions affect children, cannabinol may have the ability to help those most at risk to reduce or even eliminate their symptoms.

Can You Combine CBN and CBD?

Yes, you can combine cannabinol and CBD. In fact, it’s recommended to do so since, while similar, both cannabinoids offer different benefits for your health. Taking them together also allows you to benefit from what’s called the “ensemble effect”, which means you can take less of both and still see the same benefits as with larger doses.

How Do You Use Cannabinol?

Cannabinol is not as widely available as CBD and other cannabinoids. However, it is becoming more popular, so you can expect to see many new products on the market. Currently, you’ll find CBN available as oil, in tincture form, and capsules, vapes, tea bags, and softgels.

Our REST CBN formula includes 750 mg of not just CBN, but also CBD, reishi mushrooms, and ashwagandha, all in a softgel built around the benefits of coconut-sourced MCT oil. It’s nano-amplified to improve bioavailability and ensure quicker onset action, too. We recommend a dosage of one softgel taken with food and water.

For those who want something a little different, we offer the same formula in tincture form. It includes the same ingredients but is amplified a bit, with 1,000 mg instead of 750 mg. This is a sublingual formulation, which means you simply need to squeeze one dropper full under your tongue and then wait 30 seconds before swallowing.

The Importance of Buying from a Reputable Retailer

Cannabinoids have become increasingly popular as we come to better understand their benefits and how they work within the body. However, it is important to only purchase from a trusted retailer with complete control over their manufacturing process, and who verifies purity and effectiveness through third-party testing. This is particularly true when it comes to cannabinol.

Unlike CBD and other cannabinoids, cannabinol can only be produced through the deterioration of THC. As THC ages (or after it is exposed to heat), it transforms into CBN instead of THC. Note that cannabinol does not occur naturally in the wild and only small amounts are created through the aging process or with the application of heat and light.
