CBD: What is it?

CBD: What is it?

what is cbd

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of a group of over 80 phyto-cannabinoid compounds that are found in the Hemp (Cannabis Sativa) plant.

All mammals, including us Humans, produce cannabinoids naturally (Endocannabinoids).   They act on an internal network of receptors responsible for maintaining balance between different systems of the body.

CBD and other phyto-cannabinoids integrate into this Endocannabinoid System.

It’s thought the Endocannabinoid System has a wide range of important functions in helping to regulate the body’s health, including modulation of pain, protection of nerve cells, and the inflammatory process.

For a long time, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) was the best known of the cannabinoids found in the hemp plant – it produces the mind-altering ‘high’ affects you picture when you think of smoking marijuana.   It is a controlled substance in many parts of the world, including the UK.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound - it doesn’t get you high – and in its pure form isn’t controlled.  For this reason, interest in the potential health benefits of the compound have increased, and CBD has become a part of many people’s health and wellness regime.
